Tajdid, Amar Ma’ruf Nahi Mungkar, dan Kemerdekaan Indonesia: Membangun Toleransi Berbasis Nilai-Nilai Islam

UMJ 2023 documentation

"Continue to move forward for an advanced Indonesia" is the slogan for Indonesia's independence day in 2023. Not without reason, this motto is predicted to be one of the great hopes for welcoming the 78th anniversary of independence in the country. Innovating and updating is a glimmer of the steps of the Indonesian state to become part of a developed country.

The emergence of various innovations has had a very significant impact on human life on an unprecedented scale (Gusmian, 2009). However, what is the meaning of a developed country, if there are very few tolerance values? Therefore, it is very important to see how the reflection of religious culture plays a role in the current era.

Like the understanding of religion that is misinterpreted by some people who argue that religion actually hinders the progress of civilization. Without knowing, religion actually directs its adherents to live their lives in accordance with religious norms which of course are very relevant to everyday life.

Not without reason, religion provides guidance to humans so that the actions of their followers do not deviate and do not lose direction in thoughts and actions. This is immediately done to prevent humans from behavior that is detrimental to themselves and the surrounding environment.

Ignoring the norms of religiosity is the same as losing direction and purpose in life. As actions that have a heavy impact on human survival and the surrounding nature. So, it can be concluded that the role of religion remains very important and cannot be replaced by any technology in the modern era.

To whatever extent technology brings major changes, spiritual and moral values still have a significant place in solving today's problems (Radiansyah, 2018). For example, tajdid moves Muslims to move in a brighter and brighter direction.

Through the website muhammadiyah.or.id , it is explained that in the field of faith and worship, tajdid has the meaning of "purification" which means returning faith and worship to their purity in accordance with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad saw., so that trying to do good by following Islamic teachings according to the sunnah is form of tajdid movement.

In the context of faith, Muslims are taught to foster a sense of tolerance between religions and ethnicities and cultures. Also in Arabic, the word tolerance is more commonly used with the term ' tasamuh ' (تسامح), which originates from the word ' samuha ' (سمح). Ibnu Faris, through the Maqayis al-Lughah dictionary, argues that words consisting of letters (س – م – ح ) in Arabic have the meaning of “looseness” and “ease” (Faris, 1981: 99).

To make it easier to understand, the meaning of tasamuh or tolerance in Islam can be seen from the words of the Prophet which were continued by Ibn 'Abbas: "Allah gives mercy to those who are tolerant when buying and selling and in solving problems." Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani explained that the word "tasamu" means ease. A religion that has a tasamuh attitude means a religion that is based on convenience. He also said that this hadith encourages Muslims to be tolerant and behave well in social relations, such as trade transactions, and not to make it difficult for others and to forgive their mistakes (Hajar al-'Asqalani, 1959: 57).

So important is this attitude of tolerance that it is closely related to Islamic values. There is no need to get rid of religious norms, Islam has recommended being tolerant towards other people, regardless of ethnicity and religion. Being tolerant does not mean that we can free ourselves and others to carry out activities that are not in accordance with the teachings of the Qur'an and As-Sunnah, but we must be tolerant while still knowing the boundaries stated in Islam.

Therefore, the role of faith is no less important. Boundaries, especially those related to beliefs (aqeedah) are explained in Islamic teachings. Islam clearly avoids its followers to behave in a similar way to followers of other religions. However, Islam also emphasizes the importance of respecting and recognizing individuals who have different beliefs as individuals who have rights and responsibilities that must be respected (Muchtar Gazhali, 2016: 30).

Therefore, Islamic values effectively have a system that introduces the teachings of tolerance to its adherents. The rest, do the people want to carry it out or not? But the smallest bad deed, it should not be recommended to do. Likewise, with the smallest good deed, it should be recommended to be done. In Muhammadiyah principles, amar ma'ruf nahi munkar for Muslims aims to encourage people to do good and prevent bad.

This is closely related to the value of tolerance in accordance with Islamic beliefs. In an effort to build an independent country, the value of tolerance is an important foundation. The concept of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar emphasizes respect for differences, mutual support and mutual understanding between plural or diverse communities.

By emphasizing the values of tolerance as in the correct tajdid movement with the aim of amar ma'ruf nahi munkar , prevention of harmful behavior can be realized and actually encourage people to take good actions. On the other hand, tolerance means that the rights of all citizens are respected and treated fairly.

Therefore, in welcoming Indonesia's independence day, amar ma'ruf nahi munkar must be ensured to strengthen the spirit of tolerance, as well as becoming a foundation so that nation building is based on moral and ethical principles of mutual respect.

From an attitude of tolerance, harmony in religion can gradually be realized. Even so, harmony is still not the final value, but is only a means that must exist as a condition sine qua non  to achieve a higher goal, namely a safe and peaceful condition (D.Hendropuspito, Sociology of Religion: 17).

Thus, the atmosphere of celebrating Independence Day must be a spearhead for Muslims by celebrating it joyfully together, without forgetting the sacred values of Islam. Because, the highest celebration of independence is a people who can respect each other and not hate the differences between them .
